Odorless grease trap room

Efficient odor neutralization for technical utility rooms

Grease trap rooms are considered unavoidably unpleasant—intense odors, aerosols, and difficult-to-control hygienic conditions make them difficult to use and often lead to complaints from staff, guests, or residents.

With Oxytec air purification systems based on UV ozone or plasma, these odors can be permanently neutralizedwithout chemicals, without filter consumption, and with minimal space requirements.

Typical loads in the grease trap room

emission source Typical pollutants Special features
Grease separator (open/ventilated) Fatty acids, sulfur compounds, VOCs Very intense odor, difficult to ventilate
Sewage pipes / siphons Foul gases, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide Backflow or siphon effects, high humidity
Cleaning work / maintenance Aerosols, bioaerosols Germ contamination, explosion of odors when opened

Why Oxytec in the grease trap room?

  • Neutralizes odors directly at the source – not just in the sewer
  • Prevents odors from spreading to adjacent rooms, stairwells, or outdoor areas
  • Ensures better working conditions for maintenance personnel
  • Prevents unpleasant odors and regulatory requirements
  • Minimizes cleaning effort and protects technology from encrustation

Legal requirements

DIN EN 1825 / DIN 4040-100 (grease separators)

  • Require regular emptying and hygienic maintenance
  • Room air must not contain any emissions that are harmful to health or cause unpleasant odors

Workplace regulations / hygiene regulations

  • Rooms with odors are considered a health hazard
  • Oxytec systems help to meet air quality and odor protection requirements

Odor out – fresh air in.

Grease separators don’t have to smell bad. With innovative air purification from oxytec, your utility room becomes an odor-neutral area—hygienic, legally compliant, and sustainable.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the grease trap room smell so strong even though it is emptied regularly?

Even with regular emptying, fatty residues, foul gases, and sulfur compounds remain in the system.
In addition, the following can occur:

  • Biofilms can form in pipes or siphons
  • Odors escape through ventilation openings or backups
  • Moisture promote the spread of odors in the room

How does Oxytec neutralize these odors?

oxytec relies on active air purification through:

  • UV ozone systems: generate reactive ozone that oxidizes odor molecules
  • Plasma systems: generate a highly reactive air mixture to neutralize odors
  • Both technologies do not mask odors, but break them down

Is a room air device sufficient, or is extraction necessary?

That depends on the room:

  • In small, enclosed technical rooms, a single wall-mounted unit is often sufficient.
  • In larger rooms or where there is open access to the grease separator, a combination with extraction or negative pressure ventilation may be advisable.
We check this individually during the project consultation.

Do the devices require a lot of maintenance?

No – Oxytec devices are designed for long-term use with minimal maintenance:

  • UV-C tubes: replacement approx. once a year
  • Plasma systems: filterless, only occasional visual inspection
  • No consumables, no refilling, no chemicals

Can the devices also be installed in damp rooms?

Yes – our systems are moisture-resistant and designed for use in technical rooms with increased humidity.
Housing made of stainless steel or coated aluminum, splash-proof according to the area of application.

Are there any health risks associated with ozone or plasma?

No—our systems dose the amount of ozone precisely below levels that are harmful to health (e.g., according to DIN EN 60335).

If necessary, a catalyst can be installed to recirculate the ozone.

Plasma systems do not produce any harmful residues.

Can air purification be linked to building management systems?

Yes – all Oxytec systems are optional:

  • time-switchable
  • Sensor or odor controlled
  • controllable via relay or BUS connection
This allows air purification to be operated on demand or automatically.

Is there evidence of the effectiveness of the systems?

Yes – we provide:

  • technical test reports
  • Odor measurements in accordance with VDI 3882
  • References from restaurants, hotels, clinics, and commercial properties
  • If required, we can organize an odor inspection or pilot installation

Are the systems eligible for funding?

Depending on the state or municipality, the installation may be eligible for the following subsidy programs:

  • Hygiene measures in the catering and hotel industry
  • Investments in occupational safety or odor prevention
  • In some cases, also as part of building renovation or energy efficiency

We are happy to assist with the technical description for subsidy applications.
