Legal regulations governing the handling of ship waste

The 1988 International Marpol Agreement prevents waste from ships being disposed of at sea with its decree on "Prevention of Pollution by Ship Waste." Since 2013, the Marpol regulations have been binding worldwide.

Different mechanical ventilation systems are required in garbage rooms, depending on the size of the ship and the number of people on deck. However, there are no binding guidelines for the necessary air exchange and volume flow. The same applies to cooling capacity when garbage rooms are cooled to protect against unpleasant odors.

Recently, the VDI 2160 guideline for waste collection in Germany has included a reference to the required air exchange in waste rooms. According to this, a minimum of 0.8 air changes per hour is recommended. However, this is not sufficient. A 10-fold air exchange has become established on the market for reducing odors in waste rooms.
